Chanderi is a beautiful place that has recently featured in the big-budget Bollywood films like Kalank, Luka Chupi and Sui Dhaga. Surrounded by river, hill, forts, and baolis, it is also well-known for its textile industry. Chanderi has a variety of silk named after it, called 'Chanderi Silk', and is also famous Chanderi silk saris.
From the 11th century onwards, Chanderi had unstable powers ruling over it—from Balban to Rana Sanga of Mewar, to becoming a battlefield for the Mughals and Sultan of Malwa. In 1540, the city was captured by Sher Shah Suri and in later years came into the hands of the Marathas, Bundelas, and British, respectively. From 1861 to 1947, it remained with the Scindias.
The magnificent Chanderi Fort stands on a hilltop and dominates the skyline of the city. Built mainly by Mughal and Bundela rulers, it has three entrance gates, palaces, Jama Masjid, and a baoli along with a samadhi dedicated to the great musician Baiju Bawra. A balcony named Hawa Paur gives an amazing aerial view of the city.
