When Gandhiji wanted to experience the values of simple living, he shifted from his home in Kochrab to a humble ashram on the banks of the river Sabarmati, situated between Sabarmati Jail and a crematorium. The ashram served as the centre from where aspects of the freedom struggle were strategised, and remained home to Bapu till 1930. When Bapu began the Salt Satyagraha, he pledged never to return to this place until India had achieved complete independence. Sabarmati draws thousands of visitors every year. This includes those who want to understand his life and his values as well as introspect on ideas of independence. As we walk through the ashram, we will listen to the intriguing tales of our freedom struggle and get a sneak peek into the life of the Mahatma.
