Poetic Tales of Prayagraj

About the walk

Languages are fluid concepts. Built from heritage, people and our interactions with the world, they often remind us of our past. While growing up, the first interaction of the walk leader with the city of confluence, Allahabad, happened through a Hindi poem written by Nirala. This city has been one of the most prominent centres where the modern day Hindi evolved and took its current form. From Bharatendu Harishchandra to Madan Mohan Malviya and from ancient Sanskrit scriptures to contemporary millennial rap songs, the city of Allahabad has always offered a free space for cultural diversity and progression of civil society.

Join us on this walk in Daraganj area where we will be walking in one of the oldest suburbs of the city. Exploring literary heritage and talking about how Hindi has evolved and how Allahabad still is one of the finest centres of knowledge in North India. The walk will cover Nirala chowk, Niranjani Akhada to know Meera Bai's connection with Daraganj and Bhakti Poetry, Todaramal ka Qila and the confluence of languages, Dashashwamedh Ghat, and conclude at Nagvasuki Temple. We will get to know the story of evolution of Hindi in the city during colonial period.

This guided tour is free and is a physical tour.
