For the Mughals, gardens were more than just a reflection of their love for nature. They were amongst the earliest exercises in their architectural expression, and were used as territorial markers to demarcate and demonstrate their presence. Later, the construction of chahar bagh (cross-axial four-part garden) structures in various parts of the Indian subcontinent helped the Mughals plan their cities, and ultimately gardens also served as political metaphors.
In this walk, we will understand the ideas that went into designing Mughal Gardens, and who could afford to have garden palaces or mausoleums in the Mughal hierarchy. We will also learn more about the monuments conserved in the Sunder Nursery.
