The city of Gwalior, over centuries, has been the cradle of great dynasties and with each, the city gained new dimensions from warrior kings, poets, musicians and saints. Today, Gwalior is a modern Indian city, vibrant and bustling. Its history has been traced back to legend from 8 AD, when a chieftain called Suraj Sen was stricken by a deadly disease. He was cured by a hermit saint, Gwalipa, and in gratitude founded a city, which he named after the saint.
This walk begins at the Urwahi Gate of Gwalior Fort, the south-east entrance to Jain rock-cut idols, and continues towards Assi Khamba ki Baoli. Next to the baoli (stepwell) is the beautiful Man Singh Palace, which was built by the Tomar king in the 15th century AD. The walk continues on to the Sasbahu Temple, which was built in the 11th century in a North Indian architectural style, and then on to the Teli Ka Mandir, which represents South Indian architecture, and concludes at Suraj Kund.
The guided tour is free.
