One of the oldest localities of Bombay (now Mumbai), Byculla has had a big role to play in the history of the city. There are many historical places and old buildings around this area built mostly during the Portuguese and British rule eras.
Back in the eighteenth century, the city of Bombay was a cluster of seven islands, and Byculla was an extension of Mazgaon—one of those seven islands. Many Europeans from Mazgaon island moved here and started transforming the cultural landscape of this area, as a result, you will find some of the earliest and most famous landmarks associated with Bombay here. The Byculla railway station was one of the original stations from where the Bombay-Thane railway line was inaugurated in April 1853.
