The buildings on the iconic Marina beach road are great examples of the hybrid socio-political influences that created the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. These institutional buildings are landmarks that have been utilised differently through time. During the colonial era, they served as administrative headquarters, now they house prestigious institutional and civic campuses. On the other side of the street, is the longest beach in India, housing on its shores, statues of leaders, freedom fighters, poets, and significant figures who have contributed to arts, literature and politics. Institutions such as Presidency College, Madras University and the PWD building are examples of timeless architecture flanking the beach. The statues of Thiruvalluvar, Kannagi, Avvaiyar display the roots of language intertwined with politics. Political seeds were planted in the sands of the Marina since the British period, and today, the former chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, C.N. Annadurai, MG Ramachandran, M. Karunanidhi and J. Jayalalitha choose to rest by the sea.
The statues and memorials by the sea serve as ghosts of the past and symbols of the political movement that make Madras what it is today. Join us on this trail which reveals the history of the city, shaped by its pioneers and institutions of yesteryear.
