The mighty Tungabhadra River is the lifeline of Hampi. It is her generosity that allowed large stretches of land to be cultivated and humans to settle there, more than 4000 years ago. This fertile land also became a spiritually important one when a temple dedicated to Pampa Devi was built there by the Early Chalukyas in the sixth century. Towards the end of the thirteenth century, Harihar and Bukka Ram, a band of brothers rose up against the Islamic rulers from the north and built a city on the southern banks of Tungabhadra River as a bastion of resistance. For over 250 years this city protected the south from invasions. It was thus named ‘Vijayanagara’ (The city of victory).
Today, the former seat of the Vijayanagara Empire is a UNESCO world heritage site spread over 42 square kilometres. On this tour, we will walk along the southern bank of the river and hear stories from the history and mythology associated with Hampi. We will also learn about the lives of people in the medieval city and the activities and festivals they engaged in, on the banks of this river.
