Pune is the birthplace of the Maratha Empire. This was established by Shivaji Maharaj, and expanded by his descendants and the peshwas. It signified the overthrowing of the oppressive regime that had carried on for years, and the establishment of self-rule by and for the people of the Deccan.
Lal Mahal was the residence of Shivaji Maharaj and his mother, Jijabai, while Shaniwar Wada, built decades later, was the residence of the peshwas. Neither of these structures survive in their entirety today. Old documents and maps give us an idea of what they looked like, and tales of splendour and valour keep their memories alive.
This Independence Day, join us on this walk as we delve into the glorious history of the Marathas and rediscover Lal Mahal and Shaniwar Wada, which motivated generations of freedom fighters and social reformers like Lokmanya Tilak and Jyotiba Phule to spread their message to society at large and fight against British rule. We will also learn about the lives of the rulers who instil patriotism in the minds of current and future generations.
