You may have heard a lot of stories about Humayun's Tomb. Interestingly, the origin of this monument can be found in the nearby Nizamuddin Basti. The Sufi saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya settled in a village named Ghiyaspur and lived there for almost 60 years. He was a great saint of his day who practiced his religion while serving the common people.
His works became famous among people like the poet Amir Khusro, Emperor Shah Jahan's daughter Jahanara and Emperor Muhammad Shah Rangeela. Nizamuddin Dargah, a shrine built over the grave of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, consists of a square chamber surrounded by verandahs which are pierced by arched openings. The area around the tomb is considered sacred; the results of which is that a large number of people, including royalty, lie buried here.
In this walk through history, we will visit the grand sixteenth-century mausoleum of Mirza Aziz Koklatash, after which we will visit the Urs Mahal and the tomb of Mirza Ghalib. We will see the dargah (resting place) of Hazrat Nizamuddin and the baoli near it and listen to some unheard stories as we take a stroll around the Nizamuddin Basti.
